This is a poem that I wrote in 2011. It is a somewhat humorous, but quite serious call for help, and a reflection on Psalm 23 from a person who is constantly driven and often needs rest.
A Prayer From the Driven
Shepherd me, oh, my Shepherd!
Make me to go places I do not wish to go.
Lead my strident spirit into the unknown and unwelcomed.
Meadows of peace.
Streams of mercy.
Shepherd me, oh, my Shepherd!
Press my shoulders into the cool green grass.
Plunge my aching feet into the clear mountain stream.
Skies of hope.
Breeze of rest.
Shepherd me, oh, my Shepherd!
Lash me to your tree of loving sacrifice.
Teach me the strength of its narrow and abundant shade.
Shadow of respite.
Gate of safety.
Shepherd me, oh, my Shepherd!
Train my eyes to your singular light
While I pilgrim through ravines of oppressive darkness.
Pinpoints of guidance.
Stops of grace.
Shepherd me, oh, my Shepherd!
Guide me into hope that dissolves strident selfishness.
May your gentleness make me great.
Eyes of grace.
Arms of love.
Shepherd me, oh, my Shepherd!
